Key features

Why specify unbonded strand

Grease coating and a polyethylene sheath isolate the steel, so the tendon stays protected and free to move.

01

Complete corrosion protection

The grease coating and polyethylene sheath isolate the strand from moisture and chlorides for the life of the tendon.

02

Low friction coefficient

Low friction between strand and sheath keeps stressing losses and elongation predictable along the tendon.

03

Easy field installation

Coiled, sheathed strand is quick to place and thread on slab and beam post-tensioning work.

04

CE certified available

CE-certified supply can be arranged where the project specification requires it.

Technical answer

What is unbonded PC strand?

A short, self-contained definition for engineers and buyers specifying a post-tensioning tendon system.

Definition

Unbonded PC strand for post-tensioning

Unbonded PC strand is a post-tensioning strand coated with grease and covered by a polyethylene sheath, so the steel is isolated from the surrounding concrete instead of bonding to it. Global Overseas supplies it in 12.7 mm and 15.24 mm diameters at 1860 MPa grade to ASTM A416 or BS 5896, with a 1.0–1.5 mm PE sheath and a grease weight of at least 50 g/m. The sheath and grease provide complete corrosion protection, and the low friction coefficient lets the strand move freely during stressing.

Typical applications are post-tensioned slabs, beams and ground anchors where corrosion protection is critical, including floor systems, transfer beams and foundation work. The strand is easy to install in the field, which keeps slab and beam post-tensioning practical on congested sites, and CE-certified supply is available where required. Selection should follow the project engineer’s drawings and the approved anchorage, wedge and jacking equipment.

Specification

What to state in the RFQ

Nominal diameter 12.7 mm or 15.24 mm, standard (ASTM A416 or BS 5896), 1860 MPa grade, sheath thickness and grease weight requirement, coil weight or cut length, quantity, packing method, destination port and any certification or inspection requirement.

Compatibility

Anchorage and equipment

Confirm the approved anchorage, wedge and jacking equipment before ordering. Unbonded strand selection must follow the project engineer’s drawings and the anchorage supplier’s compatibility requirements.
